CHP urges public not to use cosmetic cream suspected to contain excessive mercury

The CHP of the Department of Health made an announcement today to the public and urged them not to use a cosmetic cream called “Supple and White Night Cream” under the brand name YIFUMEI as it may contain excessive mercury, which is harmful to health.

The appeal followed the CHP’s receipt of notification of a case of mercury poisoning from the Hospital Authority (HA) involving a female patient aged 44.  The patient was found to have proteinuria (presence of excessive proteins in urine) after admission to the hospital.  Her urine and blood samples were found to contain mercury above the respective reference levels.

Investigation revealed that the patient had been using a product labelled as “YIFUMEI Supple and White Night Cream” since 2022.  Testing by the HA revealed that a sample of “YIFUMEI Supple and White Night Cream” contained excessive mercury.  The clinical diagnosis is suspected to be related to the use of the above product.

Prolonged exposure to mercury can cause damage to the nervous system and kidneys.  Symptoms may include tremors, irritability, insomnia, memory deterioration, concentration difficulty, impaired hearing and vision, and change in taste. In severe cases, renal failure may occur.

As the content of mercury in this product exceeded the acceptable level, its use may cause serious side effects.  People who are using it should stop immediately and consult healthcare professionals as soon as possible if they feel unwell or are in doubt.  Members of the public are urged not to buy or use cosmetic cream of unknown composition or obtained from doubtful sources.
