Hong Kong people have embraced the concept of lifelong learning. In recent years, the continuing and professional education sector has flourished, as more and more people seek to upgrade their academic qualifications and improve their career prospects. Most universities also offer non-degree, adult learning courses. Other educational institutions likewise offer professional, general education and interest courses. Language courses, especially English, Mandarin and Japanese are common, and many adults study as a means of improving their prospects for a better job opportunity.
There are 12 accredited higher (tertiary) education institutions in Hong Kong. Eight of these are publicly funded through the University Grants Committee (UGC):
